So This Maniac Calls Us Yesterday…Part Two
Actress Frances Farmer circa 1944: Right before the shock treatments began.
This whole experience (please see part one if you’re just coming into the conversation) has led us down another path in our thoughts about today’s local political climate.
Here’s the deal: We’ve been thinking on this for some time now in terms of local LGBT politics and the dire scenario it all has become. We think this kind of behavior—the legwork behind the maniac woman’s phone call—- is due to the fallout from the Obama campaign aka politically correct branded and prepackaged progressive politics aka the new face of community based activism. It all started with the Courage Campaign—at least our experience of it. Then EQCA and Vote For Equality and fairly most of the social cause type big non-profits we know have jumped on that bandwagon with the exception of the black ones. And that’s only because black culture has yet to discover the evils of political correctness. We just keep things on the downlow for later discussion.
The thinking in the approach to politics and getting people motivated to become banner waving and loyal volunteers runs very similar to the kind of training folks received when they volunteered for the Obama campaign. Except now with a gay twist added to the mix its gotten, well twisted . But nonetheless here’s the basic recipe:
Just read this manual, follow the instructions, watch the video we’ve provided and presto—you’re now a bonafide disciple of Marshall Gantz and a grassroots activist too!
This kind of politics is more movement driven than thought driven—and therein lies the danger in terms of those folks not wrapped too tight as demonstrated by the maniac lady who called us. Gay orgs LOVE this brand of politics. And that’s because it’s soaked through and through with political correctness. It stinks with it. And non-ethnic gay folks cannot get enough of it. Obama’s campaign truly was like manna from heaven for the LGBT equality movement. All they’ve had to do is tweak it some for their purposes and voila! One big unified community of doers, faithful followers and believers.
Here’s the rules as applied by gay/politically progressive orgs nowadays to their followers. We call it the “herd plan” :
Enthusiasm about the herd itself is subtly expressed through various means as more important than the actual cause that the herd passionately champions. The leadership and their followers —don’t like thinking, criticisms, astute observations, curve balls or questions thrown at them. It disturbs them—-throws a monkey wrench into the whole just read the goddamn manual and follow the instructions process. They get irate and disjointed when the flow is interrupted as such. And without them being conscious of their distrust of such behavior—behavior of the educated— they attempt to ostracize or as in our case, question the mental health of the individual who dares to interrupt the manual reading or not follow the manual’s instructions.
It’s pretty scary—the Frances Farmer crazy as a loon angle they go in for when mounting a campaign against a troublesome free thinker.
That’s what all that was about with the phone call we received from that maniac lady. She was a messenger of sorts. She called to tell us that they thought we were crazy and it was imperative that we knew that they thought we were crazy. Great. You and your herd thinks we’re crazy. Cool beans. But why is it that you need to make it our business what you and your herd thinks? We were getting along just fine without that information.
And obviously they saw this and it bothered them. Misery truly loves company.
There’d obviously been some discussion about our posts here. In her over-confidence in herself maniac lady was the one who opted to “set us straight.” They’ve attempted to do this before. Never with any success as you’ve probably already surmised. And that’s cause—ta da—-we’re crazy.
Frankly, we just don’t understand how one person’s dissenting opinions could have so much impact on folks who claim to be on the right side of justice in all ways.
Oh yea, the other thing they don’t like is race. You’re not supposed to have one. At least not until there’s a herd need for it. Then your ethnicity—-if it’s the ethnicity to focused on by the herd for some purpose—-is okay to be highlighted—by them, however. Not you. For you to do so would deviate from the instruction manual. You’re supposed to be the specimen—-not the spokesperson. If you spoke you might express a thought. And that would eff things up.
So that’s why we’re such an anomaly in the whole LGBT equality deal in LA. We’re very racial, think too much, share any and every thought that pops up in the conversation bubbles of our mind, have plenty of friends outside the equality scene to make us indifferent to the rest of them and we have a natural aversion to herds and anointed leadership—unless we think they’re sexy—-the leadership.
