An Afro American Queen: Legendary Civil Rights Icon Angela Davis Speaks In LA

Dreaming of Justice, Still in the Struggle
… An Afternoon with
Angela Y. Davis

February 21, 2010
WLCAC, Phoenix Hall
10950 Central Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90059

Black civil rights icon and social activist the extraordinary Angela Davis will be appearing in Los Angeles at a speaking engagement on Sunday February 21.  The event is a fundraiser for A New Way of Life organization, a not-for-profit that helps women transition from prison. The organization helps women reunite with their children, get jobs and stay sober while providing political education to help them understand the criminal justice system and how to change it.

Angela Davis’s life story is so amazing and bigger than life that is VERY easy to romanticize her —much like the public does a mythic super-star. But the fact is, that’s where she’s at historically—-the realm of superstardom in terms of activism, black consciousness and social revolution . She certainly was the most famous female figure of the civil rights movement. For LGBT activists and community members not in the know, Angela Davis, now a retired university professor, gained notoriety during the black civil rights movement in the ‘60s. A member of the Black Panther movement, Davis landed on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List in 1970 for her alleged involvement in the murder of Marin County Judge Harold Haley. She was eventually arrested and put on trial. After spending a year and a half in jail she was acquitted of any charges related to Judge Haley’s murder.

RE 2010 Update: Eugene Hedlund New Campaign Manager; John Henning Bye Bye

eugenehair2

Eugene Hedlund, founder of Truthandhope.org and now the new campaign director for RE 2010

Okay. We’re going to be kind. Really. No sense in just being abusive or even mean. What would be the point? So we’ll just share the latest RE 2010 news: John Henning resigned some time ago from the executive committee for marriage equality 2010 initiative. You may recall our post on Henning and others being voted to that committee: The 5 White People In Charge Of The 2010 Marriage Equality Campaign.

Well things have changed since then obviously. Not only is Henning gone but so is Jeffrey Taylor. And today we find out that Truthandhope.org’s Eugene Hedlund is now the new campaign manager. We also wrote a post about Hedlund when he announced that he was starting his own 2010 campaign: Truthandhope.org Starts Own 2010 Marriage Equality Campaign; Says Existing Effort Doesn’t Support Grassroots.

When Gay Resentment Against Obama Gets Beyond Toxic

The effects of drinking too much hatorade on "Lez Get Real" blogger Paula Brooks

There’s NO WAY we could not offer commentary on one of the most recent posts from popular lesbian blogger Paula Brooks of Lez Get Real.  She was actually our original choice for RENWL’s Gay Inc Loser of the Week. But things got interrupted. In any case, apparently Miss Brooks is encouraging LGBT residents of Massachusetts to stay at home rather than vote in Tuesday’s very critical special election. No, this is no joke. Read  this segment of her post:

Now I don’t live in Massachusetts, but if I did, I would be telling President Obama I would gladly put on my walking shoes again… if he would only show me the money as it were, and do something about getting Mary Ritchie’s $15,000 back to her a little more expedient fashion… like withdrawing his Justice Department defense to Mary’s case… and to stop betraying my hopes for equality at every opportunity he gets.

However until he does… I would be telling every LGBT I know… come Tuesday… they should send Mr. Obama a loud and clear message about his dicking around with our civil rights and STAY HOME IN MASS on Election Day…

Lady GAGA’s PSA For Homeless Gay Youth

We admit we’re not really all that up on Lady GaGa. Maybe that’s cause we’re from the Madonna generation. There’s only room for one insane bottle blond in our world. But we have to give Lady GaGa props where props are due. Her most recent effort in terms of standing tall for gays underscores Lady GaGa’s commitment. Pairing up with Virgin Mobile, the pop superstar launched RE*Generation which supports homeless gay youth. According to the Virgin Mobile Web site, over two million youth (between the ages of 12 and 24) will experience at least one episode of homelessness each year and over 100,000 youth sleep on the street for 6 months or more in America.

In raising awareness and creating stronger advocacy for homeless youth through her fundraising efforts, Lady GaGa has created a special message on how you can also make a difference. Check it out:
