Six Damn Good Reads For Black LGBTs

Ralph Ellison author of literary classic Invisible Man (kinda fine, too)

We were going through our compact home library the other day looking for a book written by Mr. James Baldwin—-the title escapes us at the moment.  Anyway during our search a light bulb went on: maybe we should share this literary wealth of ours with our LGBT and same gender loving Nubian fam’ and friends who might be interested in a little critical reading. We gathered a stack of books and realized it might be best to start out with about 5 or 6 suggestions instead of a two-page list.

Ultimately we picked out six excellent works that we think you’ll enjoy if you haven’t had a chance to read any of them. If we had to choose one of them to take with us on a deserted island we have to say undoubtedly it would be Black Looks: Race and Representation by bell Hooks, hands down. It’s a classic and a must read for all African Americans. By the way, all of the selections here are non-fiction. So if you’re looking for some E. Lynn Harris drama you won’t find it here.  All titles below can be found on Amazon.com or any other major bookseller. We’ve also provided short reviews along with each title.

Here’s our Six Damn Good Reads For Black LGBTs!

Chicago Tribune Special: More black churches take on AIDS battle

We just saw this article in today’s Chicago Tribune and feel it important to rerun it here on RENWL. We certainly want to put the word out there about the black church’s expanding roll in HIV/AIDS support in the black community. Also stay tuned for our post on in in-depth look at Bishop Charles E. Blake’s Church Of God In Christ.

Boy what a can of worms we opened after writing about Blake over the last two days. Jeesh. But for now, check out this piece on the black churches involvement in helping to address the HIV/AIDS crisis in the black community and the impact of this on black LGBTs:

Community activist Jasmyne Cannick just sent out a press release on the behalf of RESPECT ME Coalition, a collaborative movement aiming to represent the interests of Black women. The group demands an apology for a talking Hoops & Yo Yo graduation greeting that says “black hos” in a dialogue between the animated characters in the card. Check this out:

We’re not even going to launch a diatribe on racism with this one. It’s pretty obvious wouldn’t you say?

New Facebook Group: Black Voices For Obama

Well it’s about time.   With some like-minded friends we’ve formed a group on Facebook called Black Voices For Obama.

We’re very excited and that’s cause so far we haven’t seen any groups like it—-post election. And don’t exactly know what Black Voices For Obama is going to look like. We’re small and brand spanking new—just started putting up the curtains and unpacking the boxes.

We feel that under immense pressure over the past year the president has demonstrated himself an exceptional leader; particularly in the areas of human rights and economic recovery. The Obama administration is one with many firsts. While we’re not fortunetellers, it looks very much like Don’t Ask Don’t Tell will be repealed by the end of this year. The President is changing the hearts and minds of America.

Rapper Ludacris Launches Hunt For Big Black Penises; Good Spin On HIV/AIDS Prevention

We just saw this on the Racialicious blog—–we don’t know where to begin. Being the big nerds that we are we were not aware that Magnum condoms where the brand of choice for hip hoppers. Magnum condoms (owned by Trojan) have been lyrically praised on the regular in several rap songs it turns out. And of course, all that did was boost Magnum sales in the hood and among rap music lovers who like to pride themselves on being in the know.
