William Tam’s Testimony Makes It Clear: Minorities Are Poorly Educated And Ignorant

We just HAD to post this tweet we came across in the discussions about the Prop 8 trial and today’s testimony by Asian Prop 8 defendant William Tam. The following is the conclusion we’re assuming a coupla white gay guys arrived to in examining Mr. Tam’s responses via Twitter:

Please discuss. Is this a predominant belief white gays hold in regards to some minority views on homosexuality? If so, what’s the view they hold on heterosexual whites who’re against same-sex marriage and homosexuality—should they be subject to education reform, too?

William Tam is Chinese. I'm not sure if the Chinese minority demographic really has lower rates of education. At least that's not what racial stereotypes would like you to think! lol

Yes, we know Tam is Chinese. I just think it's interesting that because he is a minority and homophobic that the individual in the tweet immediately went to a generalization about the education levels in minorities. Couldn't Mr. Tam just be homophobic? Does he have to be stupid, too?

Well, from what I've read, it doesn't seem Tam is very knowledgeable of sexual orientation, the topic of his political crusade. But you're right in that you can't really make any conclusions about education levels about minorities from this especially considering the minority demographic we're talking about (Chinese American voters) voted against Prop 8 rather than for it. The generalization above was clearly made in ignorance.

You're giving a single twitter post about Dr. Tam from what looks to be an underage white child a lot of credibility just for the sake of a blog headline.

That's interesting you assume that Alan. I take it you're also assuming I didn't research the twitterers before I posted that tweet. And it's not about for the sake of a blog headline. And it is about how bigotry effortlessly and easily floats throughout all segments of society. And how we do or do not notice it in terms of who's being the bigot.

I'll skip speculation about Tam and the Tweeters (nice name for a 50's retro band) none of whom I know from a rat's ass.
The question is "Is this a predominant belief white gays hold in regards to some minority views on homosexuality?"
My answer is "No".
However, the high number of African Americans who follow fundamentalist Christianity and Latinos who follow traditional Catholicism . . . and Whites who follow fundamentalist Christianity . . . contributes to high levels of faith-based homophobia. The church in minority communities is often more than a religious base. The church is a community center and social support resource for minority communities who face varying levels of hostility and intolerance in society as a whole. As a result, many members of the minority community are reluctant to go against the church and the community, thereby running the risk of being ostracized and isolated.
Still, that is sociological dynamic not a genetic trait.
