Courage Campaign And EQCA: The Other Prop 8 Trial
Truthandhope.org barrels outta nowhere taking the lead momentarily from Courage with EQCA coming up the back.
Behind the scenes gossip and analysis: What a week folks! As we reported earlier Courage Campaign got a new lease on life with the mass online circulation of their petition to Prop 8 trial’s Judge Walker demanding live broadcasting of the trial. Courage did hella’ good—getting somewhere around 180,000 plus sigs for the petition. Deadline to get all public comments to Judge Walker was this morning at 9am. All this of course planted Rick Jacobs and co. front and center this week as the “go to” org for some serious grassroots marriage equality action. Seems like suddenly all resentments against Courage for pulling out of the 2010 campaign are now forgiven and forgotten. Clearly EQCA didn’t anticipate any of this as they sat in total silence this entire week watching Courage hustle and huff petition sigs. That is, until today.
Seeing that Courage had petitioned itself back to marriage equality golden child status, we anticipated EQCA would try to hone in on some of that action—-even though they don’t really support the trial at all.
Sure enough—Geoff Kors landed in Bay Area Reporter today saying, “We think the more people talk about the issue, think about the issue, the more they move toward marriage equality.” “We support it being televised and the opposition opposes it being televised. They don’t want people hearing the arguments. They don’t want people to think about it.”
Yea, Geoff. Just like you don’t want to think about the millions of dollars in donations EQCA won’t be getting if this trial wins. Kors even got himself a spot on Good Morning America Saturday (that’s tomorrow morning) to continue on his “we really do support the trial” campaign. His minions only tweeted us 50 times about it. But it’s too late. They’ve already been upstaged by Courage.
As if there just wasn’t enough curve balls thrown today however, Truthandhope.org (talk about timing) jumped right into the middle of things with one of their marriage equality videos prominently snuggled in The New Yorker feature article A Risky Proposal. You can read it now in the online version of the mag. The hardcopy hits the streets on Monday. If you recall we wrote a piece on Truthandhope.org a few weeks back, Truthandhope.org Starts Own 2010 Marriage Equality Campaign; Says Existing Effort Doesn’t Support Grassroots.
For some odd reason none of the other LGBT/marriage equality blogs and publications felt that Truthandhope.org’s declaration was newsworthy or hardly deserving enough to even acknowledge the org’s existence. We did. And apparently so did The New Yorker. We have to say we love it when we’re in great company in terms of our editorial decisions. Blogging can be rather cut throat at times—especially when you have big blogs looking out for other big blogs—and you’re just the little guy workin’ your poor little heart out to report some honest-to-goodness news and information…sniff–sniff.
But it’s okay. At least this week we get the last laugh. And so did Truthandhope.org by our estimate. If it’s one thing all of the marriage equality orgs including Courage and EQCA, have fell short on over the last two years it would be in the messaging department. And we can’t emphasize that enough. Truthandhope.org however, they kick ass with their marriage equality vids for marriage equality. They did so as well with some work they did for the Obama campaign. But just watch this one promoting same-sex couples and family:
You’d have to be a cadaver not to get faklempt after watchin’ this. And therein lies the danger—for the other orgs. This is exactly the kind of stuff you want featured if you’re an organization trying to secure your spot as a leader in the fight for marriage equality. We just do not understand why neither Courage or EQCA can’t work out an agreement with Truthandhope.org to work with them on their stuff. Rumor has told us that Truthandhope actually did do some work for both orgs last year. But we don’t understand—-what happened? Who dropped the ball?
And yeah, we know that these days Truthandhope has some kind of agreement to work on projects with the RE 2010 folks. But at this point they’re just an afterthought—the RE 2010 folks. The Red Sea will part again before that campaign actually see’s the light of day. We say Courage—you’re slightly in the lead right now—if only forshadowed by Truthandhope for the moment. Re-up those chit chats with Truthandhope while you can. The gettin’s good with all this trial drama. And there’s obviously more to come. We think it’s best if Courage joins forces with Truthandhope.org now—-cause it’s a fifty/fifty toss up on how the trial’s gonna pan out. And if Prop 8 is upheld, these two orgs tag-teaming withCourage’s turbo power in online organizing and Truthandhope.org’s superb messaging skills—why together they can clinch the 2012 campaign quite easily.
The creation of this match made in heaven more than likely wont’ happen. We tell you it breaks our heart. Anywhoo—next week is gonna be one hell of week. In addition to Youtubing the Prop 8 trial, we also suggest that you keep an eye on the activities of the aforementioned organizations. There’s most certainly going to be more fall out as the trial begins to take shape. Courage and EQCA are going to try to out nudge one another as the main player who in the public eye, looks to be most in alignment with the legal team fighting against Prop 8. Comical yes. But serious business from where they stand. We don’t know what’s going to be more interesting to watch; the trail or these two goin’ at it. At this point we’ll say our bet’s on Courage. Although EQCA is known to put the smackdown on things—-as best demonstrated with their ruthless gutting of the 2010 campaign. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see how they plan to stalwart Courage this time around. So sad that marriage equality organizational wars can be just as intriguing as a landmark court case. But—what can ya do? The human ego clearly knows no boundaries under any and all circumstances. Be that as it may we’re nonetheless looking forward to some good reporting next week. Stay tuned.
