Tier 5 Unemployment Resources Info; Yes Dorothy, There Are Gay People Who’d Pick Food On The Table Over DADT Repeal

Um...not everybody in this unemployment line is straight yall...

Nope. The recession is not a straight disease quiet as it’s kept.  Don’t some of you folks find it odd that we know the unemployed statistics for black folks (16%) but nothing about how many LGBTs are without jobs or struggling in this brutal economy right now? No information on LGBTs in poverty, either. Or, if someone is struggling through these difficult days how they can get help.  But we know all about Dan Choi’s class ring and who dropped kicked who at this weekend’s Netroots event. Fact is, LGBT employment issues these days is not all about ENDA.  Can we work with the here and now for a minute and reach out to those folks who don’t have a job today?

As a community, we’re kinda’ thinkin’ maybe we might have our priorities a bit jacked up, you know.

You won’t find much written these days about LGBTs going through hard times, oddly enough. The most recent stuff we came across was an article on the Curve Website about lesbians in these tough times titled The Silent Majority: Lesbians and Poverty

And a very well written article  from last month on LGBT POV by Gloria Nieto titled Poverty Is A Queer Issue.

But that’s about it. We came across some resource info for those folks who are in the Tier 5 category of unemployment. Which means if you’ve been receiving unemployment for 99 weeks or longer. These are the people who are no longer eligible for unemployment benefits. And we know there’s gotta be some gay folks out there who are in the Tier 5 unemployment range. We just feel so lame because we’ve been ignoring the impact of the recession on LGBTs as well. And going forward we’re going to try and provide as much resource info as we can to help those of us who are going through challenging times right now. Anyway, if you’re in Tier 5 check out the following. We hope it helps.

And this isn't simply a problem with gay POC's either, Derrick.

Most of my acquaintances in the gay community are white and I hear a lot of their unemployment/underemployment anxieties from white gay men and lesbians.

But you'd never know that from much of what you see in the news. Instead, we see the couple willing to spend $100,000 for a child of their very own (not that there's anything wrong with that; I know a couple like that couple portrayed on CNN but still…)

I've always maintained that, in fact, the gay community has even more of a class problem than a race problem

I talked to two federal legislators this weekend at Netroots. Neither of them knew about 99ers or the 99 week limit. We're screwed.
