THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, BUT NOT THE QUEER MOVEMENT

Cross posted from Racialicious

By Guest Contributor Daisy Hernandez, cross-posted from Colorlines

Every once in awhile, a Hollywood movie hits such a perfect note of familiarity that you leave the theater feeling like you just watched a film about your white friends and it was funny, sweet–marvelous, even. And, as you’d expect, messed up on race. Not messed up in a Mel Gibson sort of way. It’s nothing outright hateful, but rather annoying and mundane, like when the white gay guy says his décor is, ya know, “Asiany,” and you debate whether to spill red wine on his new, white rug or give him an Edward Said book.

This is the charm of Lisa Cholodenko’s new summer hit, The Kids Are All Right. Her white characters are so familiar and even so likable that you want to believe all they need is a better reading list. If only race relations were so easy.

The Tragedy Of The Black Gay Blogosphere Keeps Getting More Tragic

And his name just so happens to be Tom.

We had an interesting non-exchange this afternoon with black gay blogger Alvin McEwen of the blog Holy Bullies And Headless Monsters. Mr. McEwen has been keeping himself preoccupied lately on Huff Post these days with essays condemning the racism of the Tea Party.

Oh, he’s all worked up about it. And not that we find that problematic. It’s just that with the recent racist rantings of Americablog, our petition responding to those rants, and the overly abundant coverage of the NAACP denouncing the Tea Party, we just felt maybe Mr. McEwen’s outrage could be used somewhere else where outrage on the behalf of black gay politically-minded Americans is long overdue.

So this afternoon when we saw that McEwen had penned yet another diatribe on Teabaggers and racism on Huff Post, we decided to see what he had to say. The post So Much for No Tea Party Racism: Mark Williams Expelled From National Tea Party Federation, of course gave commentary to the recent announcement by the Tea Party that they’d expelled Mark Williams (the author of “the Abraham Lincoln Letter”) and his group Tea Party Express from the National Tea Party Federation specifically because of “the Abraham Lincoln Letter.

Cleo Manago On The National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS): Will It Benefit Black People?

Guest post written by Cleo Manago

On Tuesday, July 13th 2010, President Obama presented the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) for the United States. According to his administration, the NHAS is a concise plan for moving the country forward in the fight against HIV and AIDS with three primary goals: reducing HIV incidence, increasing access to care and optimizing health outcomes, and reducing HIV-related health disparities.

The NHAS is a good first start for America. What I appreciate about the strategy is its’ unprecedented existence. No other administration has created a White House Office of National HIV/AIDS Policy, or has had so many progressive people in its midst. (The NHAS is now available to the public (You can access a PDF copy the strategy here).

Theoretically, this is a history making initiative. However, upon close review, NHAS content features elements that are not necessarily signs of innovation or a framework shift in terms of how HIV services may roll out or be resourced. It appears that the strong [white] gay identity bias (to be explained in more detail later) will continue to skew attempts at culturally diversifying how HIV services are framed, funded and prioritized.

Nation’s Oldest Black Frat Joins Arizona Boycott And Why We Think They’re Bogus

Martin Luther King Jr. pledging Alpha Phi Alpha, circa 1952 (front row, fourth person from the left) was initiated at Sigma Chapter , Boston Metro chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, while he was a graduate student at Boston University.

The Huff Post published an essay recently by Miguel Guadelupe. The title of the piece is Nation’s Oldest Black Fraternity Joins Arizona Boycott to Support Latinos. A friend of ours posted it to her Facebook profile and we just couldn’t resist checking it out. Guadelupe’s essay talks about Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., America’s oldest African American college fraternity (Est. 1906) decided to move their national convention from Phoenix, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada in response to the recent passage of Arizona’s SB1070. Below is a short excerpt:

The decision to boycott Arizona is not without a cost for Alpha Phi Alpha. Breaking contracts with Phoenix area hotels, catering, and meeting rooms means the fraternity is now in litigation with contractors. And while Mason can’t give an exact amount on how much the boycott will cost the fraternity, he estimates that Alpha is looking at over $300,000 in penalties. That doesn’t include over 3,000 Alphas who will have to change their flight and hotel reservations as soon as possible.
